Bruce, Shanti and Ben Rafoth. Eds. ESL Writers: A Guide for Writing Center Tutors. 2nd ed. Portsmouth, NH: Boynton Cook, 2009.

This is an edited collection of practical essays written by some of the most prominent TESOL scholars about tutoring ESL students in writing centers.

Glasman-Deal, Hilary. Science Research Writing for Non-Native Speakers of English. London: Imperial College Press, 2010. (online)

This practical guide for ELL in the sciences is available in online form through Stanford Libraries. While it may promote a fairly rigid style of writing, it provides students with strategies and forms they can use immediately in their graduate science courses. It is also useful to graduate students outside STEM fields.

Harklau, Linda; Kay M. Losey; and Meryl Siegal. Eds. Generation 1.5 Meets College Composition : Issues in the Teaching of Writing to U.S.-Educated Learners of ESL. Mahwah, N.J.: L. Erlbaum Associates, 1999.

This edited collection explores Generation 1.5, students who are U.S. citizens or residents whose identify with a different heritage language. The authors make a compelling argument that Generation 1.5 is a highly diverse group who should not be considered as synonymous with international ELLs.

Myers, Sharon. “Reassessing the ‘Proofreading Trap’: ESL Tutoring and Writing Instruction.” Writing Center Journal 24.1 (2003): 51-70.

In this accessible scholarly essay, Myers argues that writing instructors and tutors can and, at times, should intervene on the sentence level while working with ELLs.

Shapiro, Shawna; Raichle Farrelly, and Zuzana Tomas. Fostering International Student Success in Higher Education. Alexandria, VA: TESOL Press, 2014.

This is a practical guide to working with international students.
