Auditory Disabilities

Hearing impaired students often rely on their vision to gain most of their understanding in class; their needs are quite opposite the needs of those who are visually impaired.  Some specifics on helping them:

• While using PowerPoint is challenging for visually impaired students, it might be very helpful for those with hearing impairments.  Make sure multimedia presentations have just as much visual as auditory information so that students with hearing impairments can follow.
• A person with a hearing impairment usually relies on a stenocaptioner or interpreter; having students say their names and speak one at a time will make it much easier for the student with the hearing impairment to follow the discussion.
